A story about honoring my Mother
In My Mother’s Honor
Aug 7
I was inspired to paint a new painting and I love using inks and collage. While I was tearing old paper and cards up I started reading one of the items. It was an anniversary card honoring my parents 1st anniversary. It was from her parents. The date was July 30, 1955. Was it a coincidence that I was reading it on July 30, 2026!!! I don’t believe in coincidences. I believe she was sending me a message from heaven.
She passed away in 2022 and I have so many of her old cards and pictures. She kept everything and it was a painful day when we had to go through her stuff. It drove me crazy to be honest. She absolutely kept her own baby announcements, report cards, every card she ever received. She was 92!
As I was tearing up paper for my new painting, I realized there was a reason that little piece of paper was in my hands. She left me pieces of herself.
I have been incorporating these pieces of my life in my art. Look for them hidden in my mixed media paintings. Some are just random, but some are actual letters I sent my parents when they were on the mission field in Colombia, South America, and I was a student at Baylor University. They were our only means of communicating our daily lives with one another. Other letters are between my mom and her mom back in Texas. Our family left for the mission field in 1958 and my mom and her mom wrote letters weekly.
I used to think they were just clutter, but now I’m finding out they really have more meaning than I thought. She wanted me to share these pieces of my life with you.
Look for more sweet memories in my next painting.
